DAILY MAIL: EXCLUSIVE: Top senators focused on exposing FBI ‘corruption’ demand information from DOJ inspector general as Republican probe into origins of discredited Trump-Russia collusion investigation heats up

The Senate Republican-led probe into the origins of now-disproven Trump-Russia collusion allegations is ramping up as lawmakers look to expose the FBI for ‘corruption’ in how it conducted the investigation.

In a letter to Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz Tuesday, obtained by DailyMail.com, GOP Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, are demanding unredacted records connected to Crossfire Hurricane.

Crossfire Hurricane was the internal code name for an investigation by the FBI that began in 2016 to look into possible links between the then-Trump campaign and Russia. However, it has since been exposed that the entire basis for the investigation was founded on false information.

According to the letter, Citizens United – a conservative nonprofit – recently obtained 460 pages of ‘heavily redacted’ records after submitting a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

The inspector general produced the records as a ‘partial response’ to the FOIA request.

A Senate aide told DailyMail.com that the senators are interested in obtaining the unredacted records because they directly relate to ongoing efforts to ‘expose corruption’ within the FBI as it relates to the Trump-Russia investigation.

‘Due to massive redactions applied to the interview transcripts by a number of agencies, including the DOJ OIG, these records are impossible to review. We write to request the unredacted version of those records,’ the senators write.

They specifically requested information related to transcribed interviews with Kathleen Kavalec, Lisa Page, Loretta Lynch and Nellie Ohr – all of who were central to the original probe. In addition, they ask for information on the reported ‘170 interviews’ and whether or not they were transcribed.

The information they are seeking will help them as they continued their quest to uncover information on the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane probe.

‘The records contained in the DOJ OIG’s February 3, 2023, FOIA production to Citizens United directly relate to our ongoing efforts to expose corruption within the FBI,’ they state.

In addition, Special Counsel John Durham was appointed in 2020 by then-Attorney General Bill Barr to look into misconduct related to the Crossfire Hurricane probe.

So far, Durham has successfully obtained one conviction – former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith.

Clinesmith pleaded guilty to illegally altering an email that was then used as the basis to obtain a ‘surveillance warrant’ on Carter Page, who was serving as a Trump campaign staffer in 2016.

Johnson and Grassley also ask Horowitz whether Durham has requested those same record and transcripts, as he continues his probe.

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.

Johnson and Grassley are also separately looking into whistleblower allegations that the DOJ and FBI illegally suppressed information on Hunter Biden.

Particularly, they say that the FBI was ‘weaponized’ against sitting members of the Senate during a period of time they were probing Hunter’s role on the board of Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings.

The senators have alleged that there was a ‘scheme’ among FBI officials that would throw out damaging information on the president’s son by labeling it as ‘disinformation.’
