Greenville News: DeMint to speak at conservative summit in Greenville

Organizers of the South Carolina Freedom Summit planned in downtown Greenville in early May had already announced a string of conservative Republican speakers for the May 9 event.

On Wednesday they named one who was born in Greenville.

Former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint will be among those taking the stage at the Peace Center for a full day of conservative politics, according to Citizens United, the activist group that’s hosting the event in conjunction with U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan of Laurens.

DeMint, a Wade Hampton High School graduate who formerly ran a marketing business in Greenville, was elected to represent South Carolina in the Senate in 2004 after three terms representing Greenville/Spartanburg in the House.

He won a second Senate term in 2010 but left one-third of the way through it to become president of The Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank in Washington, DC.
